Cephas Washburn (1793-1860) was a protestant missionary to the Western Cherokees. He established Dwight Mission near present-day Russellville, Pope County, Arkansas, in 1820. Chephas Washburn's son Edward Payson Washburn, an Arkansas artist, painted this portrait.
